Packing suggestions for visitors to Dominican Republic
What to Bring:
While most of your needs can be fulfilled in shops around the island expect to pay a bit more for everything. Things you may want to bring along would be items that may be more difficult to find such as certain vitamins, extra batteries, medicines and eyeglasses. Mosquito repellant can be a good thing to as it can be in short supply at times. Mosquito repellant and sun block can also cost quite a bit more in the DR than at home. Hotel shops are more expensive for everything.
Suggestions:
- Medicines
- Extra glasses
- Sun block
- Mosquito spray
- Small first aid kit: antibiotic, sunburn spray, antacid, anti-diarrhea med, aspirin, Band-Aids,etc.
- Extra batteries
- Baby supplies
- Ear plugs

What to Wear
It’s the tropics. That means warm weather and sensible dress. Daytime clothing is decidedly casual although ultra casual, revealing wear and swimsuits should be confined to beaches and pools only. There are trade winds much of the time and these can play havoc on loose fitting clothes such as sarongs and dresses, just be aware.
Evening wear is a bit classier with men wearing slacks and at times, better restaurants and casinos, needing to wear a jacket. Women should plan on bringing some nice evening wear, the locals do like to dress up in the evenings and it always helps to fitting in to follow suit.
Clothing suggestions:
- Flip flops or sandals, preferably ones you don’t mind losing.
- Closed toed shoes suitable for dinner
- Beach shoes or Teva type sandals for boating and walking on hot sand or pebbles.
- At least one nice outfit for dinners out. Mix and match ensembles go further.
- Light wrap or tee shirt for protection against too much sun
- Hat
- Light sweater for cool nights
