Dominican Republic Transportation

Taxis
Taxis are available at the airports, hotels and by way of calling to a dispatch. The taxis typically do not have meters but instead operate with a predetermined schedule of fares between points. Always confirm what the fare is before getting into the taxi. Having a language problem with a driver, don’t just give up, instead smile, then pull out a pad of paper and pen…you write down the destination, get them to write down the fare.

“Public Cars”
Publicos are privately owned cars that may have a small taxi-like sign on the roof. They are multi passenger taxis that operate primarily in the cities. Publicos usually follow a predetermined route of sorts, picking people up and dropping them off along the way. They like to cram in as many people as possible but the fare is cheap. If you ride a long ways they may charge you again. If you want a ride just flag them down, they will stop if they have room.

Gua-guas
Cheap transport but…. These are mini vans that cruise the streets much like Publicos. They will pack in as many people as possible so if you ride in one be prepared to share the space. On the plus side, they are cheap, much cheaper than a regular taxi.

Motorconchos
A motorcycle taxi. These are dangerous and best avoided.

Bus service
Cheap, reliable and comfortable. Stops are scattered through the island and heavily in the cities. There are regional bus lines that provide service between cities. Check with your hotel for more information.

Car Rentals
Although taxis and public transportation is suitable for short distances, you will probably want to rent a car in order to have more freedom in exploring the island. For information about Car Rentals click here.
