Taxis
Taxis are available at the airports, hotels and by way of calling to a dispatch. The taxis typically do not have meters but instead operate with a predetermined schedule of fares between points. Always confirm what the fare is before getting into the taxi. Having a language problem with a driver, don’t just give up, instead smile, then pull out a pad of paper and pen…you write down the destination, get them to write down the fare.
“Public Cars”
Publicos are privately owned cars that may have a small taxi-like sign on the roof. They are multi passenger taxis that operate primarily in the cities. Publicos usually follow a predetermined route of sorts, picking people up and dropping them off along the way. They like to cram in as many people as possible but the fare is cheap. If you ride a long ways they may charge you again. If you want a ride just flag them down, they will stop if they have room.
